This class if for the 30” x 44” Jelly Roll Rug based on the pattern. You can make a smaller rug if you would like, as you will not completely finish this large one in class. You will however be able to take it home and complete it there.
Jelly Roll Rug Pattern
Sewing Machine (with zig zag stitch)
Pins and Clover Clips (or similar)
Size 14-18 Jeans Sewing Machine Needle
Best Press Starch
Thread (coordinating color - you will see the thread stitching!) with 2-3 bobbins (unless you have a machine that uses the bigger bobbins)
1 Jelly Roll -You may use scraps. You will need 40-42 2 ½” strips x WOF (or less if you want to make a smaller rug. 10-12 strips make about a 22 x 14” rug)
Batting – 1 roll of 2 ¼” x 50yds (available at The Vintage Owl)
OR 100% cotton batting cut in to 2 ¼” strips (1 ¼ yards of 96” wide batting is enough for one large rug)
Another idea is to bring a project box or something to put next to your machine to give you a larger work surface so your rug can stay flat the bigger it gets.
BEFORE CLASS: Piece your fabric strips together into one long strip. They can be end to end or the pattern has you attach them diagonally, trim and press seams. Do not press the strip in half like binding. (See Picture below) DO NOT ROLL YOUR LONG STRIP. Fan fold it so it doesn't get twisted when we do the first steps of the rug. (See Picture below-it doesn't need to be precise, just back and forth on itself-this is simply the easiest way to have your jelly roll strip so it does not twist up on you when you are sewing.)
If you are using batting scrap strips, sew strips together end to end using zigzag strip or using batting seam tape.
